An Israeli professor bought this one in 1984. I'm curious whether Jews holding small bags in their fists was a precursor to the Jew-with-a-coin. Does everyone agree that the bag holds money? Or could he be carrying his tefillin to pray?

Good observation about the outlines of the coins. But on the other issue, a carver could easily be mistaken or mis-remember.

I suspect the bag is intended to hold coins, first, because of the outlines of flat, round objects in the bag, and second, because a Jew carrying tefillin would also carry a tallit gadol.
